How to Split a GPX File Into Multiple Tracks
Split long GPS recordings into per-day, per-segment, or per-activity GPX files in the browser.
A single multi-day tour or a forgotten-to-stop recording often ends up as one giant GPX file. Splitting it makes the data usable in fitness apps, route planners, and shareable maps.
Why split?
- Per day for a multi-day tour so each day shows up as its own activity.
- Per segment when GPS dropped out mid-trip and the file has a teleport line.
- Per activity if you accidentally combined a ride and a hike in one recording.
The browser approach
The GPX Viewer & Editor supports splitting:
- Drop in the GPX file.
- Review the rendered track and stats.
- Choose Split and pick the number of segments.
- Download each as a separate GPX with original timestamps preserved.
When to use time-based vs segment-based splits
- Time-based is best for multi-day tours — split at midnight UTC or local time.
- Segment-based is best for fixing dropouts — split at the gap.
- Distance-based is best for long rides you want to break into stages.
The editor supports equal-length splits and manual cut points.
After splitting
- Re-upload each piece to Strava, Komoot, or your watch's web portal.
- Use the GPX Photo Sync tool to match photos to the right segment by timestamp.
- Or convert each segment to KML with the KML ↔ GPX Converter for Google Earth viewing.
