How to Trim a GPX Track (Remove Start/End Junk)

Clean up the beginning and end of GPS recordings so your activities don't start in your driveway.

Forgetting to stop your GPS at the parking lot is the most common reason a clean activity ends up with messy data. Trimming the start and end is a 10-second fix.

    What "junk" looks like

    • A spike from your driveway to the trailhead.
    • 0.3 km of you walking around the parking lot before the ride starts.
    • A long flat tail where you sat at the cafe with the watch still running.

These distort distance, average pace, and elevation gain.

    The browser fix

Open the GPX Viewer & Editor, drop in the file, and use the trim sliders to cut a percentage off the start and end. The map preview updates live, so you can visually confirm before exporting.

    Privacy bonus

Trimming the start removes your home address from the file — important if you share the GPX publicly (Strava, a blog, a forum). Always trim before posting tracks that begin or end at your house.

    What about mid-track edits?

For removing a bad segment in the middle (a tunnel teleport, a battery glitch), use split in the editor: split at the bad point, drop the bad piece, and re-merge if needed.
